WattPorch publishes general information about plug-in solar, home batteries, power stations and generators. It is not professional electrical, legal or financial advice.

Laws and rules vary

Plug-in solar rules differ from state to state, and utilities, cities, landlords and HOAs can add their own requirements. A law being signed is not the same as a law being in effect. Before you install anything, check your state’s current law, your utility’s rules, your lease or HOA rules, and any local permits. Our state pages show a “last checked” date, but laws can change after that date.

Electrical safety

  • Only use equipment certified for its intended use (for example, UL-listed products) and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Plug-in solar systems must not overload the circuit they connect to. If you are unsure about your wiring, talk to a licensed electrician.
  • Never connect a generator to your home’s wiring without a properly installed transfer switch or interlock. Backfeeding can kill utility workers and neighbors.

Generators and carbon monoxide

Never run a gas generator indoors, in a garage, basement or crawl space, or near windows, doors or vents, even if they are open. Carbon monoxide can kill in minutes. Install battery-operated CO alarms at home and follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s generator safety advice at cpsc.gov.

Savings and runtime estimates

Savings and runtime figures on WattPorch are estimates based on stated assumptions such as your electricity rate, sun hours, panel angle and appliance use. Your results will differ. Prices and product specifications change; check the seller’s current listing before you buy.

Solar savings versus backup power

Most plug-in solar kits without a battery stop working during a power outage for safety reasons. If you need power during outages, you need a battery, a power station or a generator.
